Fall Focus - Pediatrics, and More!

Ahh fall is here! That means wonderful fall harvest vegetables at the farmers' markets, pumpkin spice lattes and all-new pediatric CEU content on AudiologyOnline! As I hinted in last month's letter, we are honored to have leading experts in a wide range of pediatric topics presenting new clinically-focused courses this fall. Thank you to Guest Editor Rebekah Cunningham, PhD, whose expertise was invaluable in planning these courses with us. And that's not all - it's also Audiology Awareness Month, National Protect Your Hearing Month, and we certainly haven't slacked on adult-focused content either. Here's an overview of what's happening.

Happy 40th Birthday to the Cross-Check Principle!

Every audiologist learns about the cross-check principle in their very first diagnostics course. In this month's 20Q, The Cross-Check Principle in Pediatric Audiometry - Forty Years Later, Dr. Deborah Hayes talks about the seminal paper she co-authored with Dr. James Jerger that introduced this concept to audiology. She explains that even though our clinical measures have changed dramatically since that paper was published, this principle is just as relevant today as it was then. Thanks to Dr. Gus Mueller and Dr. Jay Hall for their suggestion and invitation to dig into the details with Dr. Hayes in this CEU article (and an upcoming webinar, too).

Pediatric Focus

Here are highlights of the exciting new pediatric courses we have lined up.

Assessment and Management of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder by Dr. Erin Schafer; E.A.R.S., a universal newborn hearing screening data management software, by Dr. Rebekah Cunningham; and a 3-hour course (offered for Tier 1 ABA CEUs, and others) presented by Drs. Jane Madell, Carol Flexer and Gail Whitelaw on Maximizing Outcomes for Children with Auditory DisordersIf you missed this week's live webinar, Cochlear Implants in Children Under 12 Months of Age presented by Dr. Michael Scott, you can catch the recording in our library next week.  There are more courses coming up in November that I'll tell you about next month, too!

Cognitive Issues and Outcome Measures

Figure

By the year 2050, 1 in 85 people will have dementia. 1 in 85! That certainly puts into perspective how critically important this topic is for all of us. Add to that, there is a growing body of evidence showing a link between dementia and hearing loss. What does this mean for audiologists - can hearing aids and CIs stave off cognitive decline? We are thrilled to have an excellent Vanderbilt Journal Club webinar on this topic. It features Dr. Rene Gifford highlighting key articles on hearing loss and cognitive decline, and providing clear interpretation and insights.

BTW, we have a Gr8 webinar on APHAB, COSI, SADL, IOI-HA and other outcome measures to help you with your RX. Thanks to Kelly Bailey, an AuD student from the University of Iowa, for putting together a quick how-to guide to help us keep track of not only the acronyms, but the best uses of these measures. This course will help you ensure that your adult patients with hearing aids are getting the benefit they seek and deserve from amplification and from your clinical care. View the course here.

Audiology Awareness Month

In addition to all the great resources from our professional associations, our creative team developed a nice infographic to support your efforts in putting audiology and ears front and center this month! Download it here.

Many thanks to our members, peer reviewers, presenters and authors who make everyday audiology awareness day at AudiologyOnline. We couldn't do it without you!

Cheers,

Carolyn
