A 20-year veteran of Siemens Hearing Instruments, Dr. Thomas A. Powers is currently the Director of Audiology and Strategic Development. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing the technical and audiological aspects of product development, exploring the newest technologies on the market and implementing them into a hearing aid to maximize its effectiveness for the hearing impaired community. He is also responsible for managing the clinical trials and testing of new products in the United States.
Since joining Siemens in 1981, Dr. Powers has worked in various capacities including sales and marketing before assuming his current position in 1999. In 1988, he had the unique opportunity to fit former President Ronald Reagan with a Siemens hearing aid, while he was in office. Prior to joining Siemens, Powers was a partner in an audiologic private practice from 1977-1979. Before that he spent two years in the public school system as a speech therapist immediately after obtaining his undergraduate degree.
As the Director of Audiology and Strategic Development, Dr. Powers is also responsible for all aspects of external customer training for new products. Most recently, he trained 850 hearing care professionals on the company's new TRIANO&trade family of advanced digital hearing aids and its accompanying software used for fitting the new aids. In addition, Dr. Powers manages the company's contracts for the Department of Veterans Affairs and other governmental organizations.
Dr. Powers has lectured extensively at state, national and international conferences on hearing instrument technology, outcome measures and directional microphone technology. In addition to his professional career in the hearing healthcare industry Dr. Powers is on the advisory board for both Ohio University's Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, and the Audiology and Speech Sciences Department of Purdue University. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), a member of the Academy of Dispensing Audiologists (ADA), a member of the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association (ASHA), as well as a member and President elect of the American Auditory Society (AAS) for 2003. Additionally, Dr. Powers has obtained his ASHA certification of clinical competence in audiology.
Powers holds a bachelor's of science degree from the State University of New York at Geneseo, and a masters of arts and Ph.D. in Audiology from Ohio University. He grew up in Schenectady, New York and currently resides in Northern New Jersey.
