Katz has been a practicing Audiologist for 45 years. Fifty years ago, he developed the Staggered Spondaic Word Test (SSW), a ten-minute look at the central nervous system through the ears. The SSW is used by audiologists working in either health or education professions to assess the integrity of a patient's central auditory system. This test is used in (1) locating brain abnormalities resulting from tumors, strokes or degenerative conditions, and (2) the evaluation of auditory-processing problems associated with learning and other disabilities.
The SSW Advanced Workshop is designed to train Audiologists on the most recent SSW procedures for evaluation of central auditory function, including:
- Reviewing the auditory processing centers in the brain and how they relate to one another
- Up-to-date SSW research
- Testing, scoring and demonstration of the Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) or Brain Injured patient
- Quartile analysis for fatigue/learning effects and adjusted SSW
- Site-of-lesion analyses: Total/Ear/Condition (TEC), Adjusted SSW scores
- Report writing
- Hearing loss, unilateral loss, intellectually challenged, air-bone gap, dialect and Central Nervous System (CNS) lesions
