The U.S. Department of Education (ED), Office of Special Education Programs, is still accepting comments on its proposed regulations to implement the 2004 amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Comments are due September 6, 2005. Please visit https://takeaction.asha.org to access the model letter, include your own personal experiences, and send directly to ED.

ASHA submitted a 21-page comment letter on the proposed regulations that would implement the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004, specifically on Parts B and D. ASHA expressed concern about a number of issues including: 1) qualification standards; 2) assistive technology; 3) specific learning disabilities; 4) evaluation, eligibility determinations of limited English proficient (LEP) students; and 5) early intervention services. ASHA members can view the full text of the letter on ASHA's IDEA Information Center Web site at https://www.asha.org/about/legislation-advocacy/federal/idea/. For further information, please contact Catherine D. Clarke, ASHA's Director of Education and Regulatory Advocacy, via e-mail at idea@asha.org or by phone at 800-498-2071, ext. 4159.
