Cochlear Americas has announced that the 2nd Annual Cochlear Celebration will take place February 15-18 in San Antonio, Texas at the Westin La Cantera. This event follows the first Celebration, which was held in February 2006 and drew over 1200 cochlear implant recipients and their families to Orlando, Florida.
The goal of the Cochlear Celebration is to bring together those individuals whose lives have been changed due to the cochlear implant technology. The event provides a fun and educational environment to celebrate this technology with thousands of others.
Participants in the Cochlear Celebration can attend interesting lectures and discussions about getting the most out of a cochlear implant technology in their everyday lives, witness the announcement of the 2007 Graeme Clark Scholarship winners and participate in fun activities throughout the celebration. Additionally, the following celebrities involved with the Cochlear community will attend the event:
- Professor Graeme Clark, developer of the first cochlear implant, whose rel entless dedication has enabled the tens of thousands of people the opportunity to interact more fully in their world. As the director of the Bionic Ear Institute, Professor Clark continues to explore new technology and ways to deliver innovations to help the deaf hear with more clarity and ease.
- Former Miss America Heather Whitestone McCallum, who became the first Miss America with a disability in 1994, has served as an icon in the deaf community. Heather recently received a second cochlear implant, further demonstrating the benefits and importance of bilateral implantation.
- Survivor Palau Winner Tom Westman, who drew his inspiration on the show from his daughter, a cochlear implant wearer after losing her hearing at 18 months old.
