MOUNT PLEASANT - The new dean of The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions brings a background of strong clinical and educational experience to her leadership role at Central Michigan University.
Marvis Jean Lary, associate dean for academic affairs and research in the College of Health Professions at Wichita State University, will begin her position as dean at CMU on Aug. 15.
"Dr. Lary will bring experience as a practitioner in the health care field as well as her insight and knowledge about higher education to the role of dean of this college," said Robert Kohrman, CMU's interim provost. "We are very pleased to have her join our CMU community."
CMU's receptivity to new ideas and the level of sophistication of the college's faculty and staff were only two of the reasons Lary accepted the position.
"I am very excited and honored to be appointed dean of The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions," said Lary. "My attraction to CMU was the progressive movement of the university and the huge potential for the college of health professions. The college is on the brink of great things, and I am very committed to providing leadership that will promote excellence across the spectrum of education, scholarship and service.
"I am impressed with the professionalism and collegiality demonstrated by the faculty and staff during my visit. I can't wait to be part of such an outstanding team," she said.
CMU's search committee invited three finalists to campus after conducting interviews with nine candidates in June.
"Marvis Lary is a very genuine communicator with solid experience as an administrator in the health professions," said Sue Ann Martin, College of Communications and Fine Arts dean and chair of the search committee. "The search committee was most impressed with her ideas and her leadership style. I think she will serve the college and the university well."
Lary received a physician assistant certificate and bachelor's and master's degrees in health science from Wichita State University. She earned a doctorate in higher education and instruction from Kansas State University.
She was employed as a physician assistant at two primary care clinics from 1986 through 1995. While at Wichita State University, she served as clinical director of the physician assistant program with responsibility for establishing training sites across Kansas and maintaining formal affiliation agreements with clinical sites. She supervised and evaluated 350 four-week clinical rotations per year.
Later, she served as chairwoman of the physician assistant department with additional duties of teaching, professional curriculum design, service and scholarship. In addition, she was responsible for budgetary oversight, faculty and staff assignments and evaluations, grant procurement and administration, and overall direction of three professional programs.
In 2001, she was appointed associate dean for academic affairs and research in the College of Health Professions at WSU. She provides oversight, planning and coordination of all activities of the college.
She has received many awards for her service, teaching, clinical and administrative success in clinical programs and education. Professionally, she has served as a consultant for many local, state and national health related agencies and for development of educational programs and training at many colleges and universities throughout the country.
Linda Seestedt-Stanford has been serving as CMU's acting dean of the college since founding dean Stephen Kopp accepted a position as provost at Ohio University.
