May 1, 2014. The CARE Project (TCP) is a nonprofit foundation (501c3) devoted to the emotional/adjustment counseling needs of families with children who are deaf and hard of hearing and the professionals who provide services for them. In the 4 years of its existence, TCP has focused on families with young children. More and more, it has become evident and even requested that TCP very much needed to expand its work to include hearing loss issues over the lifespan. The primary area of interest for TPC’s first expansion is with tweens/teens who are deaf and hard of hearing, their families and professional service providers.
Care Project Retreat partnered with Siemens Hearing Instruments in Bald Head Island, NC.
Teen/tweens in general present a whole new set of issues with which to cope. Layering hearing loss on top of this complex time in the life of a family only exacerbates the situation. In addition, TCP needs to include issues related to cultural diversity and hearing loss. In order to accomplish the goal of expansion and development, TCP needed funding and has now partnered with Siemens HI to bring about an entire new module for these purposes. TCP is truly excited to partner with Siemens as this collaboration will be mutually beneficial.
For Siemens Hearing Instruments, this partnership will demonstrate a renewed commitment to providing the best amplification to Active Kids and Teens. Being associated with TCP in this project will allow the establishment of brand recognition and support image in the active kids and teens area with parents, teens and professionals. Siemens is one of the world’s most trusted brands and is known for its breadth and innovation of its portfolio (wireless, re-chargeability, “robustness”). For TCP, this partnership will bring about funding for a critical area of expansion for its unique tools, strategies and modules for a much needed population and a larger, more global platform through Siemens affiliations.
CARE introduces the participants to 7 emotional stages of grief associated with loss and allows them to learn from and analyze 8 family perspectives presented through a documentary film viewing. This process will require active listening on the part of the participants and as each story is viewed in order to identify the different emotions discussed. The desired outcome for participants is to learn to become active listeners when counseling patients and their families.
CARE provides a unique opportunity to visit with 8 families through documentary film segments and to observe the different emotional stages of grief associated with challenges. There are 8 diverse perspectives presented:
- Adult hearing woman with mother who is deaf,
- Adult hearing male with parents who are deaf/sibling who is deaf,
- Adult male who is hard of hearing and wears hearing aids,
- Adult female who is culturally deaf,
- Mother of adult female who is deaf/blind,
- Professional who works with people who are deaf and hard of hearing,
- Adult male who has a cochlear implant, and
- Multi-generational family (Grandmother, mother and father with a son who is hard of hearing).
