Drawing on the expertise of inspirational presenters from the UK and further afield, the conference will provide delegates with tangible, evidence-based information which they can learn from, share with colleagues and apply to their clinical practice straight away. This year’s scientific programme offers a fantastic opportunity to learn from leading researchers and clinical experts across a huge range of subjects.
Keynote sessions
For the first time in the history of the BAA conference we are thrilled to welcome Dr Shelly Chadha from the World Health Organisation delivering the opening keynote address on Global Perspectives in the Treatment and Prevention of Hearing Loss. Closer to home, Prof Anne Schilder from UK EvidEnT will then continue to outline the clinical research agenda in the UK and share with delegates the priorities identified by clinicians in the quest for increased evidence-based practice. An innovative keynote panel session will see Professors Kevin Munro (Manchester University), Sue Hill, (Department of Health), Dr’s Paul Breckell (Action on Hearing Loss), and Melanie Ferguson (NBRUH) outline inspirational stories from their careers and discuss what the future holds for Audiology in the UK. These sessions will also include a patient perspective from a current cochlear implant wearer. On the second conference day, paediatric and vestibular clinicians will be treated to keynote sessions provided by legendary Professors Michael Halamalgyi (Australia) and Susan Scollie (Western University, Canada). They will also supplement their keynote talks by leading and participating in additional workshops, case studies and poster sessions. Adam Beckman (Plymouth) will provide a final keynote talk outlining the many innovative and inspirational initiatives that were shared at this year’s conference and provide practical guidance on helping clinicians integrate some new ideas into their practices.
In addition this year's conference will provide:
- Talks by Dr Sharon Cameron (National Acoustics Laboratories) on innovations in APD services, and Dr Doug Beck (Lamar University, Texas, USA) back by popular demand, will address current issues in Aural Rehabilitation.
- Clinical workshops to develop practical hands-on skills which will allow delegates to refine their skills or provide something new for those wishing to acquire additional skills.
- Pharmacological innovations in the prevention and treatment of hearing loss (Dr Jonathan Gale, Reader in Auditory Cell Biology (UCL Ear Institute,
University College London, UK) - Advances in implantable technologies by Dr Sue Archbold, Ear Foundation.
- Contemporary issues in ageing and cognition
- Hands on workshops in Tinnitus Management in Children, and Fitting Considerations for Borderline HA/CI patients
- Case study and literature review sessions in the major fields of diagnostic audiology, rehabilitation, paediatrics and vestibular science
- Dedicated tracks for clinical audiology, amplification/rehab, vestibular science, paediatrics, auditory processing, ageing and cognition, personal & professional development, and education.
- A dedicated learning track for Screeners and Audiology Technical Officers
- A dedicated learning track for Students
- A Professional Affairs track which will highlight issues related to education and Modernising Scientific Careers
- Specific sessions looking at leadership development within the audiology profession
- A manufacturers' track which will include demonstrations of the latest equipment and instruction on new techniques
In 2014, 44 exhibitors took part in the exhibition and it is expected that this year’s will be bigger and better as we invite all manufacturers, suppliers and service providers within the audiology field to attend conference.
Free paper and poster presentations form an integral part of the conference and are a fantastic way for those working within the audiology field to share best practice, research and network with colleagues. The BAA is calling for abstracts in the following categories: Implantable Technologies, Ageing & Cognition, Auditory Processing Disorders, Amplification, Aural Rehabilitation, Paediatrics, Diagnostic & Medical Audiology, Tinnitus, Personal and professional development, Vestibular Science, Education, Supervision and Preceptorship, Counselling and Other Topics. Successful submissions will have their research displayed at conference or may be asked to present orally to audiologists from the UK and beyond. Submitting an abstract is an easy online process and we ask that all submissions are made before the closing date on Monday 3rd August 2015.
Every year at the BAA annual conference, we take the time to acknowledge those individuals and teams who have excelled, or shown exceptional commitment to the Audiology profession over the past year. We would like to encourage everyone to nominate someone they know who deserves recognition for their achievements. There are five award categories with three open for nominations; Audiologist of the Year in memory of Peggy Chalmers, Team of the Year and the Lisa Bayliss award which is awarded to 3rd year BSc PTP students. Please note that only people who are members of the BAA can be nominated for an award with the closing date for entries being Wednesday 9th September 2015. This year, all awards will be presented at the close of conference on Thursday 26th November following which all winners and delegates will be invited to attend the Gala Dinner at the Majestic Hotel.
The theme for this year’s Gala Dinner will be a Winter Wonderland Black Tie Masquerade Ball. The evening will include fine dining and dancing with everyone being whisked away to a wonderful winter wonderland. Keep in mind that this year there will be a prize for the most spectacular mask! One ticket is included with a two day conference ticket with extras being available at time of booking.
