Briseida DeLeon Northrup, AuD., died on July 3, 2010. Dr. Northrup, known as Brisy to friends and family, spent her career dedicated to serving the underserved in the U.S. and abroad.
Dr. Northrup earned her Master's in audiology from Bradley University and her Au.D. from Arizona School of Health Sciences. She was a faculty associate at Callier Center for Communicative Disorders at the University of Texas in Dallas for more than 30 years. She was born in Panama and devoted countless hours throughout her career to developing hearing health care in Panama. Through her continued efforts, she helped establish a foundation, train professionals in hearing health care, arrange humanitarian trips to Panama and secure donations. For her tireless efforts in serving children with hearing impairment around the world and working toward the international development of audiology, she was awarded the American Academy of Audiology's (AAA) Humanitarian Award for 2010.
Dr. Northrup was first chair of AAA's Diversity and International Exchange committee and was also President of the Pan American Society of Audiology. Friends knew Brisy as someone who had a deep faith in God and who lived life to the fullest.
To honor Dr. Northrup's life and her commitment to humanitarian service in audiology, the Callier Center for Communication Disorders at The University of Texas at Dallas has established The Dr. Brisy Northrup Clinical Externship in Audiology. Funding for this externship will support annual audiology trips to Panama for participating faculty, externs and students and continue Dr. Northrup's personal mission of training students and providing audiological services to the people of Panama.
