Two-day course hosted by Audiology Systems and Otometrics gives students expert insight into the audiology profession.
Schaumburg, IL - April 2015 - Audiology Systems, a full-service, U.S. distributor of GN Otometrics products such as AURICAL®, MADSEN® and ICS®, recently launched Audiology Systems University, an exclusive two-day course, developed specifically for students who are currently enrolled and completing courses towards their doctorate in audiology. The inaugural event took place on April 16 and 17 at the Audiology Systems corporate headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois. The event included 20 students from three local universities: Northern Illinois University, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
“We are very excited to host this new and unique event for students by introducing Audiology Systems University,” says Kathleen Hill, AuD and audiology education manager at Audiology Systems. “Our educational offerings are developed in close collaboration with audiologists who collectively have more than 100 years of clinical experience. We want to extend this experience to students and give them the opportunity to learn more in a non-traditional way.”
Audiology Systems University allows students to network, learn about other audiology career paths – aside from the clinical practice – and receive hands-on head impulse training.
“These students are the future of audiology,” says Brianna Young, AuD, clinical support specialist at Audiology Systems and coordinator for the event. “We had three main goals for this event: to make ourselves as accessible as possible to the students, give attendees insight into the manufacturing side of the industry and address the state of hearing healthcare today.” She adds, “In addition, we discussed topics like product management, the process of how to release a product to market and leading edge vestibular assessment testing, such as video head impulse testing. We believe this course and future courses will serve as a valuable resource for increased industry knowledge and learning for audiology students.”
Students could also ask questions and hear first-hand about career paths from a panel of audiologists. The Audiology Systems panel featured Mona Dworsack-Dodge, AuD, director of audiology and market management, Kathleen Hill AuD, Jeanette Fitzke, AuD, field audiologist, Angela Flores, consultant, Erica Kohler, global audiology with GN ReSound, and clinical support specialists: Keeley Moore, MA, Maggie Boorazanes, AuD, Brianna Young, AuD. It also featured Otometrics product managers, Wendy Crumley-Welsh, MS, CCC-A, Jill Craig, MA and Dana Helmink, MA.
Audiology Systems invited two guest speakers to present their background and journey in the audiology profession. Kathy Ulrich, AuD and private practice audiologist, presented tips on delivering quality patient care and reviewed best practice for hearing aid verification and validation. Kristin Janky, PhD, and director of vestibular services at Boystown Research Hospital, facilitated a three-part presentation on why and how she obtained her PhD, how to diagnose vestibular disorders with the ICS® Impulse and a hands-on session on video head impulse testing (vHIT).
