20Q: Audiology to the People - Combining Technology and Connectivity for Services by Telehealth

Dr. De Wet Swanepoel

Speaking of spreading the word about audiology, this month’s 20Q with Gus Mueller is about using telehealth to spread audiology services to underserved communities or to gain efficiencies to meet the needs of more people. Our guest author is Dr. De Wet Swanepoel from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He makes the point that the number of people who need audiology services is growing much more quickly than the number of audiologists, and telehealth is one way to help us better serve our patients both now and in the future. I learned a lot from this article and I think you will, too.

                               Back to Basics

This week we kicked off our Back to Basics webinar series, with an excellent talk on calibration by Dr. Ross Roeser. We had a full house and some great questions from attendees. Check out our Back to Basics page for links to all the live and recorded webinars in this series, organized by Dr. Maureen Valente.

Individual Variability in Aided Outcomes

When you follow evidence-based practice and your patient's outcomes deviate from established norms or expectations, what guides your treatment? In November, we'll feature a week-long virtual conference that will explore individual differences in outcomes with hearing aids in order to help audiologists better customize treatment to meet each patient's needs. It features presentations from Guest Editor Dr. Jason Galster, and select authors from a recent special issue of the journal Seminars in Hearing devoted to this topic. Register today

Going Mobile!

This course is mobile compatible banner

As The Who once sang, "The world's my home when I'm mobile." While Pete Townshend didn't have AudiologyOnline courses in mind when he wrote those lyrics back in 1971, I'm psyched to tell you that most of our recorded courses are now mobile compatible. You can view them on your phone or tablet, along with the hundreds of text courses and audio courses (podcasts) in our library. Enjoy!

As you spread the word about audiology and hearing protection this month, join us on Facebook and Twitter, and we will share and retweet your posts to help build momentum and buzz. Have a great October!

Sincerely,
