What do locksmiths, urban planners, clergy and audiologists have in common? They've all made US News & World Report's list of the 30 best careers for 2009! Audiologist had also been listed as a US News best career in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
The criteria for making the list, according to US News, are those careers with the best outlook given the current and future state of the economy, best job satisfaction, least difficult required training, most prestige and highest pay.
US News dubbed audiology a profession that flies "under the radar". A varied work day, increasingly more sophisticated technology and tools available, and diverse job settings were listed among the advantages of being an audiologist. Industrial audiology was suggested as a 'smart specialty'.
In addition to audiology, several healthcare professions made the list this year, including physical therapists, nurses, and physicians' assistants. The aging population and the promises of healthcare reform from Washington indicate a growing demand and plenty of opportunities for healthcare professionals, according to the article.
