(Rockville, MD-January 29, 2009) The American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (ASHFoundation) recently awarded a record $574,000 to 65 individuals in support of groundbreaking research investigations, research travel stipends, doctoral and master's education, and clinical developments, much of which was specifically designated to aspiring audiologists and hearing scientists.
These awards were distributed with the goal of providing funding to ensure excellence in training and support innovative new research. Annually, these awards help to advance and advocate the future of audiology, speech-language pathology, and speech, language, and hearing science in an effort to provide the best possible treatments for the more than 49 million children and adults with a communication disorder.
"The ASHFoundation is very pleased and proud that we were able to raise an historical amount of funds and provide the largest number of individuals with grants and scholarships in the history of this organization," ASHFoundation Immediate Past President and audiologist Dennis Hampton says. "There are so many deserving and aspiring audiologists and hearing scientists in the field of communication sciences and these awards show the strong commitment that the ASHFoundation and our generous donors have to building the professions and helping these individuals."
The following audiologists and hearing scientists were honored as part of the ASHFoundation's funding and recognition programs. Learn more about these and other 2008 award recipients by visiting the ASHFoundation Web site at www.ashfoundation.org.

A charitable organization, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation promotes a better quality of life for children and adults with communication disorders. Its mission is to advance knowledge about the causes and treatment of hearing, speech, and language problems. The ASHFoundation also raises funds from individuals, corporations, and organizations to support research, graduate education, and special projects that foster discovery and innovation in the field of communication sciences.
The ASHFoundation is affiliated with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the national professional, scientific, and credentialing association for more than 130,000 audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists. Audiologists specialize in preventing and assessing hearing disorders as well as providing audiologic treatment including hearing aids. Speech-language pathologists identify, assess, and treat speech and language problems including swallowing disorders.
