ASHA gives awards to media for positive and prominent coverage of the communications professions and related issues and developments. Its Media Outreach Champion award goes to ASHA members for exemplary work fostering such coverage.

The 2012 media award winners and outreach champions will be recognized this coming November at ASHA's annual Convention in Atlanta.

Doctor Radio, a channel on Sirius XM-a satellite radio network with approximately 23 million subscribers, is being honored for its June 2012 interview with Nancy Helm-Estabrooks, CCC-SLP. The coverage stemmed from Helm-Estabrooks's interview with The ASHA Leader in which she discussed her lead role in delivering speech therapy to former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

The Dr. Isabel Show won for its May 2012 interview with Alina de la Paz about removing communication disorders as impediments to scholastic success. Show host Dr. Isabel Gomez-Bassols has been described as the foremost Hispanic radio psychologist in the country. The Dr. Isabel Show airs on Univision Radio, which has 16 million listeners weekly and is considered the nation's leading Hispanic radio network.

FOX News Edge, the feeder service for local FOX television affiliates, won for its coverage of "Speak Up About Hearing Loss," a campaign ASHA launched this year to encourage the public to address untreated hearing loss among older Americans.

AARP The Magazine, the largest circulation magazine in the United States, won for full page coverage in its February/March 2012 issue of the results of a collaborative poll by AARP and ASHA of AARP members about their hearing health. Audits have put the publication's circulation at 24 million, more than three times that of the magazine with the second largest circulation.

The Courier-Journal won for "Campaign Aims to End the Silence About Hearing Loss Among the Elderly," its June 2012 feature article about ASHA's hearing loss awareness campaign. The Louisville-based newspaper is the largest in Kentucky.

Media Outreach Champion Ana Anzola, who is in private practice in northern Virginia, served as a key source for Hispanic media upon the release of the AARP/ASHA poll results and the launch of ASHA's "Speak Up About Hearing Loss" campaign. The University of Maryland's Deborah Berndtson also played a major role and, along with Anzola, made it possible for the messages of the campaign to reach millions of viewers and listeners.

Meanwhile, for several years Miami-based Alina de la Paz has served as a source for major Hispanic media on a variety of topics, and Sarah Schneider has been a repeat in-studio guest on VoiceBox, a weekly program that discusses the human voice in the context of singing.
