ASHA Journals on HighWire

Hello Headliners,

As of today, ASHA has officially moved its hosting of ASHA's journals to Stanford University's HighWire Press. There will be an article in The ASHA Leader (April 11 issue) and we also will send notices to ASHA members through listserves and e-newsletters. But in the meantime, please forward this announcement to your ASHA member colleagues.

We have tried to make this switch as seamless as possible so that only the improvements will be noticed. But there still may be questions, so here are some potential questions and answers that might be helpful to you.

How do I get to the journals if I am an ASHA member?

ASHA members can get to the journals through the ASHA Web site. Use the link to Full-Text Journals on the ASHA and NSSLHA Members pull-down menu. Once you log in to the ASHA site, you can go directly to the journals. Or, you can go to journals.asha.org

Do I have to remember tow user names and passwords?

No, ASHA members only have to log in on the ASHA site. The new journals site will recognize that they are ASHA members and have access to full-text journals. However, if ASHA members want to personalize their journal site and access some added bells and whistles, they can register on the HighWire site as well.

What exactly can ASHA members do on this site that they could not do when the Journals were on ASHA's site?

  • ASHA members have access to ten more years of archived full-text journal content (back to 1980).

  • Search options such as searching in a single journal, all ASHA journals, all 900+ HighWire journals, or even include PubMed in their search. Journals can also be searched from the ASHA site, but if journal articles are the focus of the search, moving over to the HighWire site is recommended. Our site will facilitate the options.

  • Members can sign up for e-mail Table of Contents and CiteTrack alerts (choose to be alerted when an article is cited, when a particular author's paper appears, or by subject). These are available for ASHA journals and most other HighWire journals.

  • Members have complimentary full-text access to articles cited that appear in other HighWire journals.

  • Members can personalize their HighWire site with folders for most-used articles and sign up for CiteTrack to be alerted when articles of interest are published.
What other advantages does the new site offer?

  • ASHA has not been able up to now to offer libraries and other institutions or nonmembers full-text access to the journals. Our subscription type options are now print plus online and online only. This is what librarians, in particular, expect for library subscription and it is important to our subscription base to be able to offer it.

  • The exposure of our journals to a worldwide audience will increase with hosting on HighWire, where we join more than 900 other journals and are listed among the many publishers represented. Librarians can easily access information about each of the journals, including subscription pricing. We are currently offering a one-month free trial to the journals on HighWire. After April 24th, when free access ends, nonmembers can purchase full-text articles on the site. We are hoping that the number of subscribers will increase with this exposure.
This move has been a huge team effort that began last summer involving publications, IS, marketing and sales, customer service, and the Web team.
