(Sedona, AZ) Auricle Ink Publishers announces that a feature article written by Richard Carmen,Au.D., is slated to be reprinted in the March/April issue of The Saturday Evening Post, home of a treasured library of over 300 covers by Norman Rockwell. Dr. Carmen's article is beautifully illustrated by Amos Sewell in their tradition of characters, action, color and humor. It will be on newsstands in mid-February. (According to Writer's Market, circulation is about 450,000.)
The article, "It's A Noisy, Noisy World Out There," first appeared in the July-August (1999) issue of Hearing Health Magazine, and covers the risks of noise exposure in industry, recreation, and children's toys. It lists sound level emissions from an array of cacophonous origins, from a ride in a convertible car (95 dB) to a deployed auto airbag (170 dB).
In a sidebar at the outset of the article are fourteen questions on how to recognize if you have a hearing loss. Dr. Carmen writes about his own daily experiences demonstrating the risks to hearing in the average person's life, such as a hair blower, his daughter's megaphone and slamming truck doors. He stresses the importance of managing these noise levels and recommends that readers take reasonable action to reduce the risks. Among his suggestions are alerting movie theater management to uncomfortable levels, writing letters to product manufacturers, and not purchasing children's toys that emit sound levels that parents sense pose a risk. He states that, "One person can make a difference. But in today's world, you may have to shout to be heard."
