The Arizona School of Health Sciences (ASHS), a division of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM), is now accepting applications for the professional doctorate of audiology degree program. Tabitha C. Parent, audiology department chair, anticipates classes will begin in May.
After one year of development and accreditation procedures, the
*Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) issued approval for the Doctor
of Audiology (Au.D.) degree at ASHS. The NCA is the regional accrediting
body for the Midwestern United States. This follows recent approval for ASHS to grant the Au.D. degree by the Arizona Board of Private Postsecondary Education.
NCA cited ASHS as having committed and enthusiastic employees who have
designed a comprehensive and thoughtful distance education program. ASHS
was also acknowledged for designing a program that is consistent with its
mission- advancing healthcare through compassion, competence and information technology.
Audiology-2
Audiologists with a minimum of four years of experience (including the
clinical fellowship year) can apply for the distance education program.
The Evaluation of Practicing Audiologists Capabilities (EPAC) and the ASHS admissions application will assist the Audiology Admissions
Committee in determining the specific modules which each individual student will need to complete. It is anticipated that the average academic plan will consist of taking one module at a time for a full year. It is anticipated that some students may take less than one year or up to two years to complete their individual academic plans.
Distance education students in the ASHS Au.D. degree program will receive
instruction through Course Explorer Software, using a combination of
CD-ROM and web-based technology. Students can expect to be challenged by the class modules. Each one is created by practitioners and educators who have been selected based on their expertise and practical experiences in specific areas of audiology. Modules are currently being developed in areas such as Audiological Counseling, Infection Control, Specialized Electrophysiologic Procedures (including intraoperative monitoring), Assistive Listening Devices, Advanced Hearing Aid Technology, Vestibular Evaluation and Treatment Procedures, Practice Development, and many others. A curriculum guide describing the modules and a list of the distance education faculty will be available soon on the ASHS website (www.ashs.edu).
Audiology-3
KCOM established ASHS in 1995 in response to the growing demand for
health professionals in the Southwest. ASHS offers master of science degrees in medical informatics, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, and sports health care. A distance education program also exists in advanced physician assistant studies. The new audiology program is a logical and welcomed addition at ASHS. Visit the website at www.ashs.edu or call (602) 841-4077 for
information regarding applications, admissions requirements, program
design, and status updates.
