The Audiology Foundation of America (AFA) is now accepting applications for Au.D. student grants to attend the Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA) convention as part of an annual Student Mentoring Program held there. The convention will be held this year in Clearwater Beach, FL, from Oct. 29-31, 2009, and student mentoring program attendees will also receive a specially-tailored afternoon of student programming.
The grants are available to 3rd or 4th year students (as of Fall 2009) in four-year Au.D. programs. Student Mentoring Grant application forms and accompanying materials must be submitted to the AFA by August 17, 2009. Winners will participate in onsite mentoring program activities and receive paid convention registration, travel grants and sleeping rooms at the Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort in Clearwater Beach. Most meals will also be provided. The 2009 ADA Student Mentoring Program is funded by the AFA and through specially designated donations by audiology practitioners.
"Every year we have a great group of students who apply to the mentoring program, and they have tremendous enthusiasm about a future in private practice," said AFA Chair Deborah Price. "We are thrilled to be able to offer this special opportunity to network and make personal connections with audiologists who have already paved the way and made their mark as successful independent practitioners. The mentoring courses offered to the students will show them that private practice is not only possible, but a strong part of audiology's future."
The AFA developed the Student Mentoring Program in coordination with ADA, as part of an ongoing partnership between the two organizations for the purpose of advancing the autonomous practice of audiology and assisting, educating and informing its practitioners.
"ADA is passionate about fostering student mentoring as part of our ongoing commitment to the autonomous practice of audiology," said ADA President Charles R. Stone, Au.D. "We are pleased to be able to provide students with access to the information, education and relationships that reflect and support best clinical and business practices in the audiology profession, and we thank AFA for its longstanding support of this valuable program."
