McLean, VA - July 11, 2013 - The American Cochlear Implant Alliance has announced their upcoming CI-2013 Symposium, "Emerging Issues in Cochlear Implantation," October 23-26, 2013, at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.

The Symposium will address key research findings, clinical implications, and cost effectiveness related to six emerging topics in the field. The six key topics are: Hearing Preservation, Implantation of the Very Young, Implanting Multiply Involved Children, Cochlear Implants in Single-Sided Deafness, Cochlear Implantation in Older Adults, and Telehealth and Cochlear Implantation.

Each of the six topical segments (3 hours each) will include expert speakers from across the treatment continuum. The final hour of each segment will consist of a panel discussion of the speakers and additional participants who will address these topics in an interactive manner.

The Symposium will also feature plenary sessions each day to address cochlear implantation in today's health care environment. A private showing of a new film drama 95 Decibels will be held for all conference attendees and media representatives at a reception on Thursday evening, to include an interactive discussion with the film's director, crew, and actors. ACI Alliance on the Hill, an initiative on Thursday morning, will provide conference attendees with an opportunity to share information about cochlear implants with Members of Congress.

An important aim of the conference is to encourage consideration of the broader benefits of ameliorating deafness via cochlear implantation, by addressing general health benefits, quality of life, literacy, and workplace advantages.

"Emerging Issues in Cochlear Implantation" is being organized by the newly formed non-profit organization, American Cochlear Implant Alliance (ACI Alliance). The membership spans clinicians and scientists in cochlear implantation including otologists, audiologists, speech pathologists and educators as well as parent and consumer advocates. The mission of ACI Alliance is to expand access to the gift of hearing provided by cochlear implantation through research, advocacy and awareness.
