RESTON, VA. (December 21, 2004) The American Board of Audiology® (ABA) is pleased to announce the availability of the specialty credential "Board Certification in Audiology with a Specialty in Cochlear Implants". The ABA has developed this new credential to recognize the specialized knowledge acquired by professionals working with this advanced technology. An esteemed group of audiologists served as subject matter experts and worked in conjunction with a nationally recognized measurement consulting firm, Applied Measurement Professionals, Inc. (AMP), to develop this new specialty certification program under the auspices of the American Board of Audiology®. Co-chaired by Patricia Chute, Ed.D. and Cheryl DeConde Johnson, Ed.D., the specialty committee also included Kevin Franck, Ph.D.; Annelle Hodges, Ph.D.; Mary Ellen Nevins, Ed.D.; Marilyn Neault, Ph.D.; Jon Shallop, Ph.D.; William Shapiro, M.A. and Stacey Watson, M.S. The content of the ABA Cochlear Implant examination has been defined by an extensive national job analysis study.

To obtain this specialty credential, one must currently hold Board Certification in Audiology or be eligible for the same, possess experience in working with cochlear implants and meet the requirements of this written examination.

The Cochlear Implant specialty examination will be offered on two dates and in two venues in early 2005. The examination will be offered on Saturday, March 19, 2005 in Dallas, Texas, immediately following the 10th Symposium on Cochlear Implants in Children, and on Sunday, April 3, 2005 in Washington, D.C., immediately following the American Academy of Audiology Convention. The deadline for postmark of application materials for both administrations is in February 2005.

For further information regarding this specialty certification and to download the on-line application handbook, visit the ABA website at www.americanboardofaudiology.org or call the ABA at (703) 226-1060.

The American Board of Audiology®, established in 1998, commenced granting certification to audiologists in 1999. Board Certification in Audiology is a voluntary certification program administered by audiologists for audiologists by the ABA.
