Washington, D.C. -- The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) recently published a completely revised edition of The Noise Manual. The fifth edition of The Noise Manual, edited by Elliott Berger, Larry and Julia Royster, Dennis Driscoll, and Marty Layne is completely revised and updated. In addition, it contains several new chapters and appendices, with one section of the book devoted to community noise, an issue not covered in the 4th edition. A 1990's National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference found that hearing loss afflicts 28 million Americans, 10 million of which are at least partially attributable to noise-induced hearing loss.
The 800-page Noise Manual lists for $74 and can be ordered directly from AIHA by calling 703-849-8888 or via www.aiha.org. Many university academic programs have already ordered the new book for classes, among them Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Dr. David Chandler, who teaches a Doctorate of Audiology class at Gallaudet, says, 'This book assembles contributors who are at the top of their field, to produce an excellent reference for all professionals working in disciplines related to noise. I will recommend this book to my colleagues as a text for their Industrial Audiology classes.'
Elliott Berger, Senior Scientist, Auditory Research, with Aearo and the book's lead editor comments on noise exposure: 'Noise is virtually everywhere. In fact, silence-complete, absolute quiet-is so rare nowadays that for those few who experience it, they can likely cite the time and place.' Even more than the threat to hearing posed by the community environment, is workplace exposure to noise. 'Noise is arguably the most pervasive hazardous agent in the workplace with estimates suggesting upwards of 5 million and perhaps as many as 30 million U.S. workers being exposed to hazardous occupational noise levels and with millions more at risk from other ototraumatic agents,' says Berger.
