In honor of Marion Downs’s 100th birthday, the AG Bell Board of Directors passed a resolution at its March 2014 meeting in tribute to her many contributions over her lifetime to the field of audiology and especially to the field of listening and spoken language for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing. Downs spent more than 35 years providing clinical services to benefit people with hearing loss and devoted her career to the promotion of early identification of hearing loss.
A pioneer in the field, Downs was among the first to recognize the need for babies to use hearing aids as early as possible to nurture spoken language during their early critical development years. Her teachings, publications and influence have extended throughout the United States and around the world, impacting the lives of countless children and families.
As a reflection of her commitment and contributions Downs is the recipient of many honors and awards. Click here to learn more about Marion Downs and her work on behalf of listening and spoken language for individuals with hearing loss.
