The A.G. Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) and Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) California and Nevada chapters are holding events for two members of the House Ways and Means Committee in the coming weeks. The AG Bell Nevada chapter will host a luncheon for Rep. Shelley Berkley in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 16, 2008, and the HLAA and AG Bell California chapters will host an event for Rep. Mike Thompson in Napa on Friday, August 22, 2008. Rep. Berkley is a co-sponsor of the Hearing Aid Tax Credit (H.R. 2329), while Rep. Thompson is a great supporter of hearing health issues. The events will be similar to recent events held for Rep. Nick Lampson in Texas, Rep. Chris Van Hollen in Maryland, and Rep. Dave Camp in Michigan.
Lyndsay Groff, an International Hearing Society (IHS) member in Napa, is one of the main organizers of the California event. Both events are sponsored by the Hearing Industries Association (HIA). Active participation by hearing health professionals is important to maximize attendance at such events as was demonstrated by Ed Deneau, an IHS member in Midland, MI. Any hearing health professional in the area is welcome to attend and invite their patients to attend as well.
Both events are open to the public for no charge. AG Bell and HLAA members in each city will highlight the importance of hearing health issues including the Hearing Aid Tax Credit which currently has 102 House co-sponsors. Similar legislation in the Senate, (S1410) currently has 11 co-sponsors. The Hearing Aid Tax credit would provide a $500 credit towards the purchase of a hearing aid for children or people 55 and older. For details about either event, contact Andy Bopp,
