Lafayette, IN - Second year AuD students will be the beneficiaries of a new scholarship in 2004. Developed and administered by the Audiology Foundation of America, and funded by the Oticon Foundation, also known as the William Demant & Wife Ida Emilie Foundation, the grant will support 5 exceptional students over the next three years.
AuD program Directors will be invited to submit one nominee following the posting of first semester grades. Nominees will be first year students, who will be in the second year when the awards are given.
The AFA and the Oticon Foundation also provide scholarships for two third year AuD residential students. Nominees for 3rd yr scholarships are in the process of submitting their applications and selection will begin this month.
Last year the Directors of the AFA visited campuses of the winners, to present them formally with their scholarships. Students were invited to attend a special awards luncheon during which AFA Directors presented a special program developed by Dr. Leslie Neal on professionalism. In addition to the scholarship awards, all third year students received otoscopes from the AFA. In 2002, University of Texas-Dallas, and Ball State University AuD students enjoyed the visit from their future colleagues, as well as gifts of the new audiology symbol pins.
"This $25,000 grant allows us to help more excellent students continue their education to become Doctors of Audiology", states AFA Chair Kenneth L. Lowder, Au.D. "As more programs change over to AuD education, our future as a doctoral profession becomes more secure. The AuD movement is being promoted by practitioners who realize the need for entering practitioners to be ready to utilize modern technology and provide excellent patient care. The award winning students are bound to be future leaders in the profession."
