Lafayette, IN -The Audiology Foundation of America (AFA) raised over $45,000 at the recent Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA) convention in Scottsdale, AZ, through combined efforts in both the annual art auction and golf tournament.
This year's AFA Art Auction garnered a net income of almost $21,000. The two-bedroom time-share condo in Sedona, AZ, donated by Richard Carmen, Au.D., brought the high bid of the evening at $6,000. Another popular item, "Ear Construction Site" donated by Hearing Art, was purchased by an Au.D. supporter and given in turn to a recent Au.D. graduate from the Arizona School of Health Sciences who is taking a stand for the profession and opening a private practice in Florida. Other auction items included jewelry, prints, paintings and carvings, and an expanded silent auction produced more than double the income over last year's debut.
The AFA Golf Tournament was held this year on the Desert Course at the Tournament Players Club - Scottsdale, and brought in almost $25,000. Over 70 golfers competed in the event, and first place honors were awarded to the team of Mike Poppen, Tom Todd, and Drs. Don Miller and Steve Mock. In addition, Don Miller won Bernafon's "closest to the pin" contest, and Justin Tourtillot, Au.D., won Unitron's "longest drive" contest.
Seventeen sponsors, including Advance for Audiologists, AVADA Hearing, Berge Hearing, Bernafon, ESCO, The Gillum Group, GN Resound, MicroTech, OMNI, Oticon, Qualitone, Rexton, Siemens, Sonic Innovations, Starkey, Unitron and Widex, provided assistance at the golf tournament through hole sponsorships, lunch, photography, transportation and beverage carts, and the 19th hole party. In addition, OMNI provided food sponsorship for the art auction.
"Thanks to the tremendous support we received from our sponsors this year, as well as the overwhelming participation from golf players, art donors and art purchasers, and ADA, we will be able to make an even larger impact on our mission to transition the Au.D.," said AFA Chair Kenneth Lowder, Au.D. "This year's auction funded most of our student mentoring program, and the additional financial help will allow us to continue to improve education, offer more scholarships and work better on behalf of the profession, with the overall goal of upgrading education and clinical training to lead to better patient care for consumers. Together, we are making the goal of doctoral education a reality."
