Lafayette, IN -The Audiology Foundation of America (AFA) is now accepting applications for the Leo Doerfler Memorial Scholarship. The $5,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a Ph.D. student who holds an Au.D. degree and is determined by the scholarship committee to have the greatest potential impact on research that will benefit the practice of audiology. Applications will be accepted until May 1, 2007.
The Leo Doerfler Memorial Scholarship has been made possible through memorial gifts given to the AFA in honor of Dr. Leo Doerfler, in addition to other AFA support. Dr. Doerfler was the second individual to receive a Ph.D. in audiology, and was a founding director of the AFA, as well as founding president of the Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA).
The Leo Doerfler Memorial Scholarship program exemplifies the goals and commitment of the AFA to fostering the education and training of audiologists. It also reflects Dr. Doerfler's understanding and commitment to scientific endeavors in audiology, which he felt would be materially strengthened by Doctor of Audiology programs that freed Ph.D. programs to compete in the scientific marketplace.
"The AFA is very pleased to offer the Doerfler Scholarship again this year," said AFA Executive Director Susan Paarlberg. "Dr. Doerfler was a trailblazer for the audiology profession, and we will continue to honor his memory and life's work by awarding this scholarship to a student who shares his passion for scientific discovery."
