West Lafayette, IN - The Audiology Foundation of America recently elected four new directors to serve on its Board. These individuals make a major commitment to the profession by volunteering their time and talents.
James R. Carroll, AuD, has operated a private practice in Knoxville, Tennessee since 1977. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Dr. Carroll, who received his AuD degree in August 2000, was a member of Arizona School Health Sciences' first graduating class.
He is a member of ADA and has served as president of the Audiological Resource Association and the Tennessee Hearing Society.
As an AFA Director, Dr. Carroll hopes to use his more than 25 years of experience as an independent practitioner to assist and advise the AFA in transitioning audiology to an autonomous doctoring profession.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966, Dr. Esther Ginsberg spent several years as an elementary school teacher and eleven years working with visually impaired people. She entered the audiology profession in 1977 and has been an educational audiologist with the Los Angeles Unified School District since 1981. Dr. Ginsberg earned her AuD degree from Arizona School of Health Sciences in May 2002.
She agreed to serve, as an AFA Director because she believes the AFA is one of the strongest engines driving the transition to the AuD degree as the professional standard of practice. According to Dr. Ginsberg, "It is a privilege to follow the path of previous directors and make further contributions to hearing health care and reach our ultimate goal of true professional autonomy."
Dr. Ginsberg, an avid reader and volunteer for environmental causes, lives with her husband, David Cohen, in suburban Los Angeles.
Robert Gippin, JD, received his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1973 and is a partner in the firm of Thompson Hine LLP, a 350-lawyer firm based in Cleveland with offices in other parts of Ohio, New York, Washington and Brussels. He specializes in complex business litigation, but also has business clients in the national audiology and automotive tool fields.
As a result of representing the AFA in its litigation with ASHA, he became very interested in the AuD movement. Mr. Gippin hopes to contribute his legal expertise and experience to help further the AuD movement and in particular, lend assistance in updating the licensing and insurance reimbursement status for the AuD degree. He is the father of four children and lives with his wife Susan in Akron, Ohio.
New director, Susan Terry, AuD, has been actively involved in the AuD movement since its inception. Dr. Terry earned her Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Audiology from Florida State University and her AuD degree from Arizona School of Health Sciences.
She has been in private practice in St. Petersburg, Florida since 1988 and specializes in amplification technology. Dr. Terry is a much sought after consultant to local medical facilities.
In addition to her memberships in AAA, ADA and the Florida Academy of Audiology, Terry is past president and current secretary of the St. Petersburg Sunrise Rotary Club.
When asked to serve as an AFA Director Dr. Terry responded, "I am very honored to be asked to serve on the AFA Board of Directors. I feel that the AuD is our future. Without the pioneering efforts of the AFA we would have no AuD programs. I look forward to serving on the Board and continuing the mission of the AFA."
AFA Directors Nancy Green, AuD, Darrell Micken, AuD and Leslie Neal, PhD stepped down after many years of dedication and service to the profession's transition to the AuD degree. All will continue their support as members of the AFA's Advisory Committee.
