ASHS Bestows AFA Endowed Student Excellence Award

In a recent ceremony, the Arizona School of Health Sciences (ASHS) awarded its Audiology Foundation of America (AFA) Endowed Student Excellence Award to two of its most outstanding residential students.

The annual $1,000 scholarship was split between the winning students, who were selected on the basis of their clinical skills, academic standing, demonstrated commitment to professional organizations and essay on professionalism. This year's winners were Kristen Carr and Hsin-Yi Yang.

Carr is a third-year student at ASHS. She has excelled in a variety of clinical rotations, served as a teaching assistant for the Auditory Processing Disorders class, and has been actively involved in local and national NAFDA, as well as other professional associations and meetings.

Yang is also a third-year student at ASHS. She has an outstanding academic record through her first three years, and has sought out extra curricular activities to enhance her skills. She has demonstrated enthusiasm and skill development during her various clinical rotations, and has been involved in local community service as well as professional organizations.

ASHS Graduates Honored with Professional Leadership Awards

During March graduation exercises at ASHS, Karen Kantzes, Au.D., and Meghan Abraham, Au.D., both received AFA Professional Leadership Awards. These awards honor graduating distance education students. Winners are recognized for their positive attitude and strong work ethic throughout their Au.D. program, their involvement in professional activities to promote the profession and patient care, and their dedication to public service.

Dr. Kantzes is a senior audiologist at the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center (CHSC) as well as an adjunct clinical instructor in the Communication Sciences Department at Case Western Reserve University. She was recognized for her work in overseeing CHSC's Sound Advice program, as well as her initiative to co-develop a lecture series to educate the public about hearing loss and rehabilitative options.

Dr. Abraham is an audiologist with Hearing and Balance Clinic/ENT Associates of Northern Colorado in Fort Collins, CO. She was recognized for her involvement in professional organizations, such as the Vestibular Disorders Association (VEDA), as well as her involvement in the community through the Larimer County Hearing Aid Bank and Larimer and Boulder County Home Intervention Programs. She also participated in a medical mission trip to Guatemala to provide audiological services and hearing aids.

The AFA is a non-profit foundation whose mission is to empower audiologists to be independent and autonomous practitioners by supporting their educational preparation, professional practice and leadership development.
