The world's largest meeting dedicated to acoustics, Acoustics '08 Paris, was held June 30 - July 4, 2008. It incorporated the 155th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), the 5th Forum Acusticum of the European Acoustics Association (EAA), the 9th Congrès Français d'Acoustique of the French Acoustical Society (SFA) integrating the 7th EUROpean conference on NOISE control (euronoise), the 9th European Conference on Underwater Acoustics (ecua) and the 60th Anniversary of the SFA. It was expected to draw 4,000 attendees.
Since the study of acoustics encompasses a broad range of disciplines, the topics presented at Acoustics '08 Paris varied widely as well as evidenced by a quick overview of the research. Topics ranged from the effects that human sounds have on marine animals, to measuring the sound of ice breaking in Antarctica, to the affect that color has on our perception of loudness, and much more. In the spirit of international collaboration, ASA has made lay language papers from Acoustics '08 Paris available on their website.
Although ASA indicates that not all of the research may have been peer reviewed at the time of the posting, it is fascinating reading for both audiologists and non-audiologists alike, www.acoustics.org/press/155th/lay_lang.html.
