The Social Security Administration (SSA) has begun the process of revising regulations that they use to evaluate hearing impairments and disturbance of labyrinthine-vestibular function of adults and children who apply for, or receive, disability benefits under title II and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments based on disability under title XVI of the Social Security Act. The American Academy of Audiology previously commented on an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) in May 2005. The Pediatric Audiology Subcommittee of the Academy Government Relations Committee subsequently has met with SSA policy staff to provide expert guidance in this process particularly as the proposed regulations relate to criteria that apply to children. The Academy anticipates that a proposed rule will be issued in early 2007.
