Allyn and Bacon recently released the 8th edition of "Introduction to Audiology" by Frederick Martin and John Clark. ISBN # 0-205-36641-4.

Dr. Douglas L. Beck, editor-in-chief of www.audiologyonline.com offered the following notes on the text.....

"The new Martin and Clark text is arguably one of the most valuable introductory texts for hearing healthcare professionals. I studied an earlier version of this book when I was an undergraduate. I recall that on many occasions, after we learned a new test or procedure in graduate school, we often returned to the Martin text to get "just the facts" without the hype!

Regarding the 8th edition, I found the basic discussions and "decomplication" of acoustic phenomena very useful. Martin and Clark have once again successfully maintained and updated this important work. The text is comprehensive and explains difficult concepts in simple and pragmatic terms. Special sections include; masking, bone conduction, basic psychoacoustics, site of lesion tests, pediatric screenings and diagnostic tests, anatomy and physiology of the central and auditory pathways, counseling, tinnitus and many others.

A new feature that increased the depth (and value) of the text is the enclosed CD-ROM. The CD offers movies of clinical procedures and has sound samples and voice overs, which quickly and efficiently explain new and classic auditory ideas.

There are two points I would like to make regarding the CD. First, it worked flawlessly, and of course, I did not read the instructions. Secondly, if I had to explain to someone how to tie a shoelace, without any tools besides written text - it would be a daunting task. However, if I could show a ten second movie about how to tie a shoe, it would be a snap. That's what the CD does.

In brief... I highly recommend the 8th edition of Martin and Clark's classic text "Introduction to Audiology." For more information, or to purchase the text, CLICK HERE.
