2007-2008 College/University Scholarship Awards

The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) offers several scholarships for undergraduate and graduate study for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Criteria

  • Diagnosis of hearing loss prior to acquiring spoken language (known as pre-lingual hearing loss)
  • Degree of hearing loss: Range of moderate-to-profound. Applicants must have a Pure-Tone Average (PTA) of 60dB or greater in the better ear in the speech frequencies of 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz are eligible to apply
  • Use spoken language as their primary mode of communication
  • Enrolled (or registered for enrollment,) or applied full-time to a mainstream and accredited college or university
Scholarships

  • Allie Raney Hunt Scholarship: One $2,000 scholarship for a student who is oral deaf.
  • Bennion Family Scholarship: One $2,000 scholarship to be presented annually to undergraduate students.
  • DHHS Scholarship Fund: Two $1,000 scholarships for students who are members of AG Bell and members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Section (DHHS).
  • Elsie M. Bell Grosvenor Scholarship: One $2,000 scholarship for a student who has been accepted into a mainstream college in the Washington, D.C., area.
  • Federation of Jewish Women's Organization Scholarship: One $2,000 scholarship for a student who is hearing impaired.
  • George H. Nofer Scholarship: One $5,000 scholarship for a graduate student who is accepted to an accredited law school or masters/doctoral program in public policy as a full-time student, but has not yet enrolled, and has a minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 3.0. Recipients who have completed at least nine credit hours with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 may apply for a renewed scholarship in their second and third year of study.   • Herbert P. Feibelman, Jr., Scholarship: One $2,500 scholarship for a student or a child of a parent who is a member in good standing of AG Bell.
  • Ladies' Auxiliary National Rural Letter Carriers Scholarship: One $2,000 for a student who is deaf.
  • Louis DiCarlo Scholarship: One $2,000 scholarship for a graduate student who is deaf and uses spoken communication.
  • Lucille B. Abt Scholarship: Ten $5,000 scholarships for students who are deaf who use spoken communication and lipreading as their preferred form of communication.
  • Robert H. Weitbrecht Scholarship: One $2,500 scholarship for an individual who demonstrates leadership potential with priority given to those studying engineering or science.
  • Samuel M. and Gertrude G. Levy Scholarship Fund: One $2,000 scholarship for an undergraduate student who is oral deaf.
  • Walter W. and Thelma C. Hissey College Scholarship Fund: Two $5,000 scholarships for undergraduate and graduate fields of study.
  • Volta Scholarship Fund: One $2,000 scholarship for students who are oral deaf.
Submission Requirements

Please use the following checklist to ensure your application includes all required materials. Applicants are encourage to keep a photocopy of their original application.

Completed signed application

An audiological report from the last 12 months or most recent map confirming that applicant has 60dB or greater hearing loss in the speech frequencies of 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz and diagnoses with a moderate-to- profound hearing loss.

Two recommendations from non-relatives from the professional and/or academic fields who can personally to testify the student's academic abilities and personal character.

Recommendation from a current AG Bell member. If you do not know an AG Bell member, please provide a recommendation from a non-relative.

Official transcripts of high school or college courses completed.

One-page essay discussing career goals and how oral spoken language helps you achieve them.

Application Deadline

Application and related materials must be received at AG Bell by March 1, 2007. Late and incomplete applications will not be accepted under any circumstances. Applicants are encouraged to submit materials in advance of the deadline.
