Telecoils, Hearing Loops and Auracast: A Hybrid Solution to Client Satisfaction

View Course Details Please note: exam questions are subject to change.

1.  Why do hearing aid users prefer hearing loops over other conventional hearing assistive listening devices that use FM or infrared?
  1. The hearing loop is convenient and less stigmatizing; users only have to push on the telecoil button, and no one needs to know they are using the hearing loop
  2. The telecoil is programmed for the user’s individual hearing loss and therefore sounds better than a generic assistive listening device
  3. Users hear with greater clarity, and especially when they use a T-coil-only setting, they do not hear the background noise
  4. All of the above
2.  When is the best time to verify the telecoil performance of the telecoil in a test box?
  1. Verification is not needed if you use real-ear measures of the microphone
  2. Verification is best done after the hearing instrument’s settings have been verified with real-ear measures.
  3. An ANSI telecoil test is required before any programming, and nothing else is required.
  4. Following the first fit of the hearing aid
3.  For listening in a hearing loop, it is best if the hearing aid’s telecoil is positioned:
  1. Vertically
  2. Horizontally
  3. Diagonally
  4. In one hearing aid only
4.  What should the professional emphasize when counseling clients about telecoils?
  1. Telecoils make the instrument much larger, and most users don’t want this
  2. Clients don’t need them – Bluetooth is doing what telecoils do and more
  3. Telecoils are difficult to activate
  4. Explain that hearing aids do not restore hearing to normal and that the telecoil can augment the capabilities of the hearing instrument.
5.  What should professionals do today regarding assistive listening technology, with telecoils and a future Auracast™ Broadcast Audio used as part of an Assistive Listening System (*Identified as Auracast ALS in this presentation)
  1. They should not bother; they don’t think counseling on assistive listening is part of Best Practices or essential, and besides, most professionals do not have the time.
  2. Clients will only need counseling on Auracast ALS because it will do what telecoils can do today and more, and Auracast assistive listening systems will be installed in millions of places around the world in no time and immediately work without any glitches with every make and model hearing aid as long as the device is equipped with Auracast.
  3. Nothing; hearing aids will soon be so technologically advanced that they can overcome hearing difficulties in all situations, and neither telecoils nor Auracast ALS will be needed.
  4. Fit HA with both telecoils and Auracast, because Auracast ALS will likely function initially like traditional systems (where venues hand out headphones or neckloop with Auracast receivers) while existing loops, FM & IR systems will continue to be in use for years to come. In time, with quality installations that meet the 2027 IEC standard 60118-17, Auracast ALS will be available for clients.
