Audiologists are responsible for ensuring optimal amplification outcomes for their patients. Often the primary goal is to better hear and understand speech. Many factors can affect the output of the hearing aids as measured in the patient’s ear. For this reason, it is critical to verify at initial fitting whether the hearing aids can be programmed to rehabilitate the hearing loss and provide speech audibility. This course provides practical information to effectively use real-ear verification measures and improve patient outcomes.

Research indicates that using visual aids during counseling can significantly improve patient understanding, engagement, and information retention, particularly with respect to abstract or complex concepts. This course highlights analogies between central auditory processing and visual processing.

This course reviews the medical and educational impact of unilateral hearing loss for children, current recommendations regarding device and rehabilitation options, and conducting functional testing in the clinic and school settings to provide individualized recommendations for families and educational teams.

The performance of hearing aids in meeting rooms, theaters, and houses of worship is greatly enhanced by assistive technology: hearing loops, FM/Infrared assistive listening devices with neckloops as mandated under Americans with Disabilities law, and, hopefully soon, future public Auracast systems, but only if users have hearing devices that can connect to these systems. This course will cover the basics of telecoils (T-coil programming, verification, and validation), how Auracast figures into this, and a brief overview of how you/your clients can foster future proof hearing access in the community.
