Children process speech in noisy environments less efficiently than adults, yet the underlying cognitive mechanisms driving these differences remain unclear. This study examines how age, noise level, and phonological awareness influence children's speech sound categorization in noise.

The American Academy of Audiology recently published a clinical consensus statement on pediatric vestibular assessment to serve as a guide for assessing vestibular function in the pediatric population. The purpose of this presentation is to review content provided within the guide. Test considerations and interpretation of appropriate bedside assessment techniques, vestibular evoked myogenic potential, video head impulse, videonystagmography, rotary chair and various pediatric questionnaires will be reviewed.

This two-part series will provide important background and guidance for Speech Language Pathologists, Audiologists, Educators and others who serve children whose hearing loss was early identified to help professionals support families to access the services and support that they need for their child. The program will be of interest to both those with little knowledge of the EHDI system and those with more extensive background as we address both programmatic elements and the barriers that may prevent a child from receiving services in a timely manner.

Passage of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) has led to dramatic increases in newborn hearing screening, but early intervention of identified children still falls short, with up to 30% of identified children not receiving definitive hearing testing or intervention after initial screening—a phenomenon known as “lost to follow-up.” This presentation reviews the specific barriers associated with the failure of children to receive timely services, including inequities posed by Medicaid, complex enrollment processes, and lack of understanding by many parents and PCPs of the importance of timely follow-up.

Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) 101 will describe the complex system of care that has evolved over the last 22-plus years. This presentation will include an overview as well as new, emerging initiatives and how you can collaborate with your state of territory program.

Teenagers and pre-teenagers with hearing loss have unique and diverse listening needs, with listening demands at home, at school, at work, and in extracurricular activities. This course reviews the unique challenges facing this population and examines some hearing aid technologies that can help teenagers in their daily lives, including noise reduction, tap control, and microphone directionality.

This is a two-part course focusing on diagnosis and management of pediatric unilateral hearing losses in the clinical setting, the impact of unilateral hearing loss in the educational setting, and building professional working relationships to best support our patients/students. This course reviews the medical and educational impact of unilateral hearing loss for children, current recommendations regarding device and rehabilitation options, and conducting functional testing in the clinic and school settings to provide individualized recommendations for families and educational teams.

This course explores how to use the Cortical Auditory Evoked Potential for verifying hearing technologies on the user, evaluating the severity of Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder, and evaluating pediatric patients with Auditory Processing Disorders. Real world Cortical tracings and how to apply normative data to them are discussed.
