This course reviews the basics of the neurodiversity movement, presents some of the current supporting research, examines common communication differences between neurotypical and neurodiverse communicators, and discusses how neurodiverse and D/hh identities may intersect to impact communication in a hearing healthcare environment.

In a four-part discussion series, the Academy will address the range of incivilities and microaggressions that audiologists and students may experience in their various practice and education settings. The series will give voice to real experiences while offering practical tools and strategies within each discussion to help move the profession holistically toward committing to cultural humility in practice. Part one of the series will provide an overview of microaggressions and the framework of cultural humility, as well as begin to introduce strategies within the context of individual stories.

This course introduces original research on supporting sexual and gender minority (SGM) audiology students alongside best practices suggested in other fields. Guided group discussions will be used to identify strategies for implementing these practices in audiology programs and clinical placements to support students.

Cultural literacy is an important component of patient-centered care, but how this is addressed by audiologists and their respective workplaces remains largely varied. This session provides an overview of audiologists’ perspectives on cultural literacy and the degree to which audiologists are prepared and confident in delivering culturally sensitive care necessary for patient-centered care.

This course explores the integration of social determinants of health (SDOH) into audiology practice, emphasizing the impact of socioeconomic, educational, environmental, and healthcare access factors on hearing health outcomes. Participants will gain insights into identifying, addressing, and advocating for SDOH-related disparities to promote equity and improve patient care.

Recent research has indicated that millions of Americans, 0.7% of the total population, identify as transgender. This presentation provides an overview of transgender identity for clinical audiologists and summarizes the social, legal, and medical landscape of transgender identity as it relates to audiology and the auditory and vestibular systems.

This course will discuss ways of incorporating cultural humility into everyday practice. It will also stress the importance of self-reflection, to allow hearing healthcare providers to examine their attitudes on cultural humility and foster views about acceptance and inclusion to create more authentic and meaningful therapeutic relationships with their clients.

An increasing number of people who are neurodiverse (people who have conditions such as autism, ADHD, and dyslexia) are pursuing higher education, including education and employment in the field of audiology. This presentation by neurodivergent professionals promotes a cultural shift of inclusion for students, clinicians, researchers, and professors who identify as neurodivergent, and discusses the practical and ethical considerations for neurodiversity inclusivity in audiology.
