This course reports on a project using community-engaged activities to infuse patient narratives into a course on hearing devices. Results showed improved student understanding of the impact of hearing differences, and increased student desire to include community engagement and involvement as part of their career path.

This 2-part course is designed to provide audiologic counseling for adult patients includes an understanding and effective use of patient-centered care (PCC) and family-centered care (FCC). This course will review evidence-based principles of PCC and FCC, and apply them to audiologic practices and will focus on identity, self-concept, social communication, self-determination and self-advocacy as part of the educational program.

This course will discuss the importance of supporting and empowering parents and caregivers from the point of a child’s newborn hearing screening through school age. Parents report a need for different types of supports at different points in their family journey and audiologists and other professionals are in a unique position to provide or facilitate support of families across time.

Functional auditory assessment and continuing assessment is critical in order to determine the current level of function, develop appropriate goals for intervention, and achieve maximum outcomes. Learning to listen drives everything else: speech intelligibility, language competence, reading, academics, and life-long learning. This course offers a detailed look at functional auditory assessment and intervention, to provide audiologists with a better understanding of hearing loss in children in terms of the broader speech, language, learning and academic contexts. Additional videos to demonstrate key points will be included.

This course provides a review and discussion of current research exploring factors that affect the listening and spoken language outcomes achieved by children with cochlear implants, with key takeaways for audiologists. This article is written in an engaging Q & A format.

This presentation will describe the results of a project funded by the Hearing Industry Research Consortium regarding detection and learning of new words by adults and children with hearing loss.

This course will focus on the critical partnership between educational/school audiology and community audiology services. Issues that maximize educational and communication outcomes for school-aged children will be highlighted.

This course will address the numerous planning considerations for school age children using cochlear implant technology. It will discuss the many interwoven factors that impact student outcomes, effective educational placements and supports, and recommended planning considerations for students who may be enrolled in any educational setting.

Many school districts no longer have educational audiologists. Students with hearing loss continue to need all the services that educational audiologists have provided. Clinical audiologists now need to pick up this slack if their young patients with hearing loss are going to succeed in today’s challenging academic environment. This session will discuss contemporary audiological needs of children with hearing loss in schools, how clinical audiologists can help meet those needs, and how to network with schools from a clinical setting.

This course will explain the rationale for creation of a Family Advisory Council. The benefits of a Family Advisory Council to audiology staff and patients will also be illustrated. This course is presented in partnership with Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
