This seminar will describe the theoretical reasons why people enjoy loud sounds, especially loud music. The theory provides an understanding of why people continually expose themselves to sound levels which cause them harm, even when they know, and provides direction for interventions.
Please note: You may earn ABA Tier 1 credits for this course if you complete it as part of the course 32754, " Leisure Noise in Hearing, presented in partnership with Seminars in Hearing." Course 32754 contains recordings of all five events from our 2019 series on Leisure Noise. ABA Tier 1 CEUs can be earned only when all modules are completed as part of course 32754.

David Welch has a background in psychology and auditory neurophysiology, and is interested and active in the area of community audiology. He has an interest in noise and its impacts on health, including noise-induced hearing loss, but also on health more broadly. In this, he has an active role in the Dangerous Decibels programme for reducing noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus. He is currently Head of Audiology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
