In my fifteen years of working with DHH students from Pre-K up till age 22 I have found that students need as much support as they can receive from those professionals knowledgeable in the field of Deaf Education, especially when shared by/ more meaningful coming from peer mentors. I wish we could arrange something similar in our school district. We do our DHH kids a disservice by not addressing their SEL needs.

I love the idea of support groups for kids with HL. Self-Advocacy and self awareness are so important for all kids but it is something that is especially important for kids who have hearing loss.

Some of the test questions don't reflect the material taught. E.g. Question 7 says Self Determination includes the following: Relatedness, Autonomy and Self-Efficacy; whereas the presentation taught that Self-Determination includes Competency, Autonomy and Relatedness. When I chose Competency because the other answers didn't match what was taught, it was scored wrong.

I'm very interested and invested in student support groups for students who are DHH and I appreciated the emphasis on outcomes for students to support my case for why we need these programs in our schools.

over the past 10 years I have witnessed a decline in the availability of programs that support self-advocacy and knowledge about hearing loss for tweens and teens. With the disappearance of organizations such as VOICE in Ontario, and the decline in special education programs, funding for these peer-mentor support workshops/gatherings has declined. Many new ToDHHs have never heard of or participated in these programs; their main advocates have retired and new grads are lacking in the experience to create these programs or advocate for funding. Templates like PEAK are desperately needed - along with guidance in advocacy for re-establishing peer-mentor experiences.

I totally agreed with the premise behind the development of PEAK, and the problems associated with it. Several years ago I tried to implement a program surrounding students with atresia and ran into some of the same issues. I really did like a couple of the concepts presented such as calling it a "Terrific Teacher Does..." or the Amazing Race idea.

As someone who does not work as an educational audiologist, it helped me to understand an area where I can help my pediatric/high school age patients (by trying to find resources in the area in which they can connect with other kids their age, and young adults who may have advise on who to transition into college/ career after high school).
