Course: #35142Level: Intermediate 1 Hour 224 ReviewsHearing loss is associated with decreased health-related quality of life, accelerated cognitive decline, and dementia. Cognition may be amenable to comprehensive hearing rehabilitative treatment consisting of the use of hearing technologies (hearing aids, Osseointegrated devices, and other assistive devices) and rehabilitative training. However, there are no randomized controlled trials to definitely show that hearing intervention can reduce the rate of cognitive decline. Furthermore, little is known about the different types, degrees, and configurations of hearing loss and how that may influence cognitive outcomes. A review of evidence and current studies will be provided.

- After this course learners will be able to summarize the observed associations between hearing loss and cognition from available epidemiology research.

Vicky Sanchez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery within the Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida. She teaches, performs clinical services, and leads several research studies. She is an investigator in the multi-site Auditory Rehabilitation & Clinical Trials (ARCT) Laboratory and her research areas of interest are speech perception, auditory cognitive neuroscience, auditory rehabilitation, evidence-based practice, and the effects of various disorders and interventions on the auditory and vestibular systems. Vicky’s current projects include developing and/or evaluating novel approaches to treat acquired forms of hearing loss by taking a translational pathway from bench to bedside.
