- After this course, participants will be able to describe the components of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) and the interface with and impact on parents during the EHDI process.

Chief Strategy Officer, AG Bell
Gayla Guignard, M.A., CCC-A/SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT has served as AG Bell’s Chief Strategy Officer since September, 2015. Gayla has worked as a direct service provider, clinical audiology and speech-language pathology supervisor, State Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Coordinator, and as the inaugural director of Indiana’s Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education (CDHHE). She has served in numerous leadership roles on national committees and work groups. Gayla’s current work is focused on bringing knowledge forward about listening and spoken language and related areas for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. She is deeply interested in systems that serve families and individuals and seeks to be involved in systems change as a way to realize potential and improve outcomes for all individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Julie Swaim's oldest child lost his hearing from meningitis at 10 months old. The last 28 years she has dedicated her time to helping her son communicate, successfully navigate school years and ultimately help other parents and children with hearing loss learn about available resources. She served on the Council of Volunteers and Organizations for Hoosiers with Disabilities (COVOH) and 8 years on the Indiana State Advisory Council for Children with Special Needs focusing on improving services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children who were mainstreamed in their home schools. In 2010 she began working at the Indiana Early Hearing and Detection Intervention(EHDI) program to insure that all Hoosier babies who refer on their newborn hearing screens get the needed follow up to insure their hearing status. She also has been a Bi-lingual Guide By Your Side for Indiana Hands and Voices. Along with her part-time responsibilities for Indiana EHDI Julie is the AG Bell Early Intervention Parent Consultant and helps parents who email or call the AG Bell New Parent Hotline.
