The FDA OTC hearing aid ruling identifies a battery of electro-acoustic tests that the manufacturer of OTC products must complete on their devices and subsequently publish to help ensure consumer safety. This course will overview an OTC/DTC Test Suite developed by Audioscan that can be used by clinicians to administer this test battery on any OTC hearing aid and on other non-prescriptive hearing assistance products.

- After this course, participants will be able to describe today’s more diverse hearing technology options palette and how such options interface with the diversity of needs that hearing care professionals are positioned to address.
- After this course, participants will be able to describe how to employ the Verift 2 as a tool to measure the electro-acoustic performance of over-the-counter hearing aids as specified by the FDA to confirm product safety.
- After this course, participants will be able to evaluate over-the-counter hearing aids and/or direct-to-consumer hearing assistance products for both safety and efficacy as they consider which of these products to offer within their practice.
- After this course, participants will be able to counsel consumers about the safety and efficacy of any hearing assistance product of interest to the consumer.

David J. Smriga is a senior audiology consultant for Audioscan, a division of Etymonic Design, Inc., a major manufacturer of hearing instrument verification and fitting equipment. Mr. Smriga received his master’s degree in audiology from Northern Illinois University in 1976. During his subsequent career, Mr. Smriga has held positions in both clinical and research audiology at the Health Sciences Center In Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba Medical School, as well as senior management positions in sales, marketing, product management, and public relations for some of the industry’s leading hearing instrument manufacturing firms. Mr. Smriga also founded AuDNet, the industry’s first hearing care-focused Group Purchasing Organization. Mr. Smriga has conducted over 600 lectures in North America and in Europe, and has authored over fifty publications ranging in topic from inter-operative brainstem monitoring to counselor selling. For the last fourteen years, Mr. Smriga has been Audioscan’s chief lecturer on the use of real-ear measurement technology and audibility-based fitting strategies. He is well known for his unique way of presenting complex information in a clear, logical, and understandable way.
