Changes in brain function as it relates to hearing aid use goes by many names. Acclimatization, adaptation, adjustment, and more recently, brain plasticity have all been used to describe the effects of amplification on the auditory system. Here to describe the effects of neuro-plasticity stemming from both hearing loss and hearing aid use are Dr. Limor Lavie and Dr. Karen Banai from the University of Haifa in Israel.

This course aims to provide participants with an overview of the clinical bimodal fitting practices and the NAL procedure for fine-tuning a hearing aid for use with a cochlear implant.

This presentation is designed to discuss the role of hearing aids/amplification in the treatment of functional hearing losses/auditory processing disorders.

Restaurant dining experiences are among the most importance places where we communicate, yet they are immensely difficult places for older adults to communicate effectively. This interview with Dr. Rachael Piper will review her capstone study that examines self-perceived difficulties, willingness to pay, willingness to stay and speech intelligibility data as a function of hearing loss in older adults. Advantages and limitations of hearing aid technology and how to squeeze the most benefit from hearing aids in noise will be part of the conversation. While listening to this podcast, it is helpful to follow along with Figures 2 and 3 of the attached study.

There are assumptions and fitting decisions hearing care providers make when fitting amplification designed to address more typical patients. However, when fitting patients with more complex hearing loss those assumptions and fitting practices may become irrelevant. This course will review considerations and suggestions for amplification to achieve the best possible outcome for these patients.

The relationship between hearing loss, hearing aids, and cognitive impairment has been the subject of much discussion over the past decade or so. In this session, we will explore the literature surrounding hearing aids and cognitive impairment and apply it to clinical practice.

This course will describe the language barriers often faced at an audiology practice in a major metropolitan hospital, and how these barriers are overcome to provide the best patient care. Different specialty areas of audiology will be discussed, including auditory processing disorders, adult amplification, and pediatric cochlear implantation.
