Question

Why does Bio-logic offer only the full Hint Pro system and not the speech materials on CD?

Answer

The HINT® Pro is a complete system for evaluating functional hearing in quiet and in noise. The system includes both hardware and software and requires a PC. It uses the HINT sentence materials that were previously available on a CD. In that format, the sentence materials had to be delivered via the audiometer and had to be manually mixed with the speech noise. The CD recordings could not be used with headphones or insert earphones, they could only be presented in the sound field. Additionally the HINT test performed by using the CD recordings was not standardized in terms of the test procedure or scoring. Norm-referenced data were not available to aid interpretation.

The full HINT Pro system solves all of these issues of quality and interpretation because it features computerized, adaptive test administration, scoring and report generation. It includes normative data so the patient's HINT scores can be compared to normal hearing individuals. The test can be administered via headphones using virtual audio sound processing that simulates the various conditions of noise front, noise right and noise left. It can also be administered through the sound field by using your existing sound field speakers or via speakers purchased as an option to the HINT Pro system.

The HINT Pro system offers the sentence materials in more than 12 languages. Since the administration and scoring of the test is standardized, the results can be compared from site to site and from test to test over time. The patient can be shown graphical data that illustrate his performance compared to individuals with normal HINT scores in order to enhance counseling and set realistic expectations. Unaided and aided Hint scores can provide evidence of hearing aid benefit and assist with selection of the optimal hearing aid programming and characteristics.

Due to the superior features and benefits offered by the full HINT Pro system, the CD version of the HINT sentence materials is no longer available.

The Hearing Health Collaborative is a multidisciplinary alliance between audiologists, physicians, professional organizations, and patient advocacy groups that took a scientific approach to understand the causes preventing early identification of hearing loss. Three Primary factors were identified: (1) the need for a vital sign for hearing loss, (2) a necessary hearing loss staging system, and (3) clearly defined best practices for screening and referral, particularly within primary care.
