Question

Would it be appropriate to report CPT 92700 for troubleshooting a non-working speech processor for a cochlear implant?

Answer

The description of CPT code 92700 is Unlisted otorhinolaryngological service or procedure. Unlisted codes can be reported for a wide variety of services, and since sound processor troubleshooting doesn't have a code of its own 92700 could be appropriate to report. However, when reporting unlisted codes, the provider will typically need to provide supplemental explanations and/or documentation of the time and materials necessary to provide the service. This information is then reviewed by the insurance plan to determine coverage and payment.

Additional codes to consider for a troubleshooting service may include the following HCPCS L codes:
L7500, Repair of prosthetic device, hourly rate
L7510, Repair of prosthetic device, repair or replace minor parts
L7520, Repair prosthetic device, labor component, per 15 minutes

These L codes often have restrictions on enrollment or provider type before these codes can be accepted, so check with your payer prior to reporting these codes.

Cochlear implants are highly underutilized by people who could benefit and one of the most common reasons that people don’t pursue the intervention is a misperception that they or their family will be paying for the device and related services out-of-pocket. This introduction to health insurance and cochlear implants will explain the typical coverage process in public and private health insurance plans as well as the likely financial responsibility of the individual or family. Presenters are the director of an innovative cochlear implant program and a national advocate for cochlear implant access. This course is presented by AudiologyOnline in partnership with ACIA.
