Question
I work with 3 ENT's and would like to implement the use of hearing in noise tests. What CPT codes are typically used for this test? What is the typical amount billed? Do Medicare and private insurance pay for this testing?
Answer
There is no specific code for the hearing in noise test (HINT) but many audiologists use the 92556 CPT code which is by definition "speech audiometry threshold with speech recognition" or 92700 which is "unlisted otorhinolaryngological service or procedure" and that may also be used for this particular test. Medicare and private insurance do reimburse for these codes. You will want to refer to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. Audiologists are encouraged to get their own Provider Identification Number (PIN) for billing purposes.
