Can Medications Worsen Vestibular Aqueduct Syndrome?

Question

Could medications worsen vestibular aqueduct syndrome? For example, if a patient with VAS took medication with a diuretic effect (side effects being dry mouth, difficulty urinating, where even nausea and dizziness were listed)?

Answer

To my knowledge and according to a review of Enlarged Vestibular Aqueduct Syndrome (EVAS) on Medline, I am not aware of any medications that aggravate the condition.

Probably the most important associations with EVAS are: 1) head trauma - even minor - can cause loss of hearing in affected ears; and 2) evidence suggests an association with the gene that causes Pendred syndrome (which can also be associated with Mondini malformations).
