How can I identify cochlear dead regions in my patients who have hearing loss?
Answer
The TEN Test was designed to identify cochlear dead regions. A dead region is a complete loss of function of the inner hair cells over a specific frequency region and should be suspected when hearing loss is greater than 60 to 70 dB. During audiometry, when intensity levels become a high enough, it is possible for the pure tone to stimulate the good areas within the same cochlea. If the patient responds to the tone, however, that is not the true hearing threshold. The purpose of the TEN Test is to identify when this is happening - TEN stands for Threshold Equalization Noise. When the TEN noise is presented along with the pure tone, it is possible to identify a dead region. This test is integrated into the GSI AudioStar Pro and with the GSI Pello that includes the Special Test license. This may be performed easily when a dead region is suspected.
