BTE Repair Rates

Question

What are repair rates for BTEs and what is the most common cause of BTE repair?

Answer

To best address this question, we can use data from our All Make Repair service. BTEs that are out of warranty have a repair rate of about 14%. New BTEs run about 5%.

Custom hearing aids (ITE, ITC and CIC) comprise 55% of repairs. 17% of these need to be re-done. The BTEs are 44% of all repairs with a slightly smaller re-do rate of 15%. The remaining 1% are body aids, eyeglasses and other specialized products.

These percentages are calculated for a 4-week cycle. But are typical for the year to date figures.

The most common BTE repair action is replacement of a defective switch or volume control (in ITEs the most common problem is receiver malfunction -- commonly due to ear wax). In general, switches and controls get the most handling so it stands to reason they would be the first components to fail.

This podcast will be a discussion between Brian Taylor of Signia and his guest, Barbara Weinstein, professor of audiology at City University of New York. They will outline the concept of auditory wellness, how it can be measured clinically and how properly fitted hearing aids have the potential to improve auditory wellness.
